Ron Unertl

Ron Unertl

Central County Airport has no "fixed base operator", but Ron's shop/hangar (UnertlAir) is the 68C center of quality rebuilding, restoration and painting of worthy aircraft.

After growing up in Mosinee, WI, and graduating from Stout State (Menomonie, WI) in 1960, Ron has been:  shop teacher, originator of a tech school auto shop in Stevens Point, Manawa H.S. teacher, insurance safety consultant in San Francisco, and Safety Director for Boeing 747 Flight Test Group in Seattle. Not a "West Coast person", he returned to Wisconsin (Weyauwega) in '69 to teach. Through the '70s & '80s he was constructor of an automated concrete plant, earth home builder, cabinet maker, truck mechanic, service manager... until he finally found his true love, rebuilding airplanes; getting his A&P in '92.

Ron flight-trained in a 1958 Cessna 150 and soloed in May 1965. He bought a '62 Piper Colt, based it at Central County, and flew it back and forth to Wausau for lessons. He's owned 14 aircraft and presently owns and flies an M-4 (round tail) Maule, and a 7AC Champ (not to mention the planes in the shop in various stages of completion).

Active in the Central County Fliers for over 25 years, Ron was heavily involved in the design drawing, planning, and finishing of the 68C hangar/clubhouse in 2000. He's the mason of the beautiful stone fireplace that you see in many of the images on these pages. Ron presently resides in Waupaca.
